The irony was thick at the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions. For starters, due to the 2020 calendar year being shortened due to the pandemic, the PGA Tour opted to get the field closer to traditional size by inviting 2020 Tour Championship players, regardless if they won in 2020 or not.

One of those guys was Harris English, who of course went on to win the Tournament of Champions… as a non-champion.

His performance at Kapalua allowed him to be the first person to earn his way back here in 2022.

English fired 65-67-66-69 to reach 25-under, the lowest score since Jordan Spieth got to 25-under and 2016, and the second lowest since Ernie Els set the tournament record of 31-under in 2003.

English still had to fend of Joaquin Niemann in a playoff, winning with a birdie on the par-5 18th to Niemann’s par.

The former Georgia Bulldog also made birdie on 18 in regulation as part of a back nine 33.

English was first in the field in strokes gained putting (6.842 total) and eighth off the tee (2.558).

Kapalua’s greens are spacious, but hitting 62 of 72 greens in regulation (86.11%) is still impressive. He was still only T-3rd in that stat.

English also finished T-11th at the 2014 Tournament of Champions.

The 32-year-old’s career has been in a renaissance since 2020.

Particularly last year, when he one twice and added his sixth career PGA Tour title at the Travelers Championship.

English’s one-hole playoff with Niemann in Maui was child’s play compared to the eight holes it took to outduel Kramer Hickock at the Travelers Championship.

He also finished third at the U.S. Open and fourth at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational en route to making the American Ryder Cup team.

English cooled off late in 2021, but I have to imagine he, like a lot of big names did around that time of the year, began to run out of gas. Especially considering dealing with uncharted success like he did.

Getting to unwind on the island and rekindle good vibes from 2021 will allow English to get his groove back after a disappointing fall after Whistling Straits.
