All we can say is Greg Norman must have read our article saying he needed to DO something instead of talk. He just announced the LIV Golf Invitational Series of eight exhibitions starting in June of this year.  At least four conflict with PGA Tour events and three of the other four may conflict.

With his plan, Greg Norman is not only taking a swing at the PGA Tour, he’s throwing a punch at Canada, the entire Quad Cities, and Detroit for starters.  Then, in the fall series, he’s going after Northern California, Las Vegas, and the country of Bermuda. And the location for the CJ Cup this year has not been announced so we don’t know if that’s a target of his.

Greg Norman doesn’t get that the PGA Tour tournaments raise money for non-profit entities all over the world, particularly in the communities where its events are held.

Greg Norman is not doing that. He doesn’t see that the PGA Tour touches thousands of people all over the US, at least.

Greg Norman is not only taking a swing at the PGA Tour, he’s throwing a punch at Canada, the entire Quad Cities, and Detroit…

What Greg Norman is doing is setting up pay-for-play exhibitions. So different deal.  Different goals. Different outcomes. This is all about money and wresting control of golf from the PGA Tour.

Here are the LIV events slated for the summer:

June 9-11: Centurion Golf Club – London

Against RBC Canadian Open, just before the U.S. Open

July 1-3: Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club – Portland

Against John Deere Classic

July 29-31: Trump National Golf Club Bedminster – New  Jersey

Against Rocket Mortgage

These are the fall PGA Tour events that LIV may conflict with, using last year’s schedule:

Sept 2-4: The International – Boston

Open Week—No Conflict

Sept 16-18: Rich Harvest Farms – Chicago

Against Fortinet Championship and just before Presidents Cup

Oct 7-9: Stonehill Golf Club – Bangkok

Against Shriners Children’s Open

Oct 14-16: Royal Greens Golf Club – Jeddah

Against CJ Cup

Oct 28-30: Team Championship

Against Butterfield Bermuda Championship

For the last four, the LIV fall events, we can only estimate the conflicts based on last year’s schedule. The PGA Tour never releases schedule information this early in the season.

The PGA Tour requires members to play in 15 events per season.  Players who do that can ask for releases to play an event that conflicts with a PGA Tour event.  Most often, three releases a year are allowed before golfers have to do something in return or are told no.

It will be very interesting to see who does what, who plays where, and who requests releases.

There are still plenty of questions.

If golfers request a release for a LIV event, will they be turned down because of Greg Norman’s previous statements about the PGA Tour and because he has explicitly created events opposing the PGA Tour?

Who will be willing to walk away from the PGA Tour, which includes much more than a schedule. It features a retirement package that is supposedly unmatched in sports, and a chance to play past 50.

Who will give up a chance to qualify for the Masters?  Play Ryder Cup?  Play Presidents Cup, which Norman hounded the Tour to create?

That’s just for starters.

Hopefully, the PGA Tour will announce the list of players who ask for releases when the time comes.  That’s what people need to know.
