Talor Gooch’s breakout season on the PGA Tour came in 2020-21 and continues on in this campaign.

The former Oklahoma State standout won for the first time in the big leagues when he prevailed at the RSM Classic. It culminated in a scorching fall that featured five top-11s.

Gooch’s stellar form cooled a bit in 2022, but he’s still made five of eight stroke-play cuts and took T-7th against a strong field at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Gooch has an advantage most big dogs in this week’s AT&T Byron Nelson field don’t have.

The 30-year-old up-and-comer has played the course before.

He was under par all four rounds at the 2021 AT&T Byron Nelson en route to T-39th (69-69-67-71). Gooch struggled off the tee but was 13th in the field in strokes gained around the green (1.773).

His short game is one of his strengths. Gooch ranks seventh on the PGA Tour in SG around the green (.521) and is 33rd in sand saves (57.73%).

He’s also fourth in par-5 scoring average (4.46) and first in par-3 scoring (2.94).

The last time we saw him in action was with Max Homa at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The two buddies finished T-21st.

Gooch has played well in Texas before. He’s already got a pair of top-fives at the Houston Open in his young career.

I’m not sure he cracks the top five here in McKinney, but a good week should be in store.
