Some caution is necessary when considering Brooks Koepka in a non-major. Especially if that tournament is the week before a major championship like this week.

It’s a reason why BK’s not higher up my list for the AT&T Byron Nelson, but he’s been playing too well to completely ignore.

Koepka has three top-20s in his last five starts. That includes T-16th at the Honda Classic, T-12th at the Valspar Championship, and a run to the WGC-Match Play quarterfinals.

He’ll look to replicate the success he had in Texas at the Match Play.

This will be Koepka’s first trip to TPC Craig Ranch. The course should favor a big hitter like him. He can attack the par-5s and has the length throughout the bag to handle three of the par-3s that measure 215-plus yards.

The 32-year-old out of Florida State doesn’t have gaudy season stats, but that’s a product of the lulls he can sometimes go into. He’s 19th in driving distance (309.8) and 21st in rough proximity (41’2”), meaning he can succeed with a bomb and gouge method.

He’s also fifth in proximity from 175-200 yards (27’9”).

Koepka hasn’t won in Texas before, but he has runner-up finishes at the 2016 AT&T Byron Nelson when it was at Las Colinas and at the 2018 Fort Worth Invitational.

Even if his focus isn’t fully on this week, Koepka should still want to round into good form when he quests for his first major in three years at Southern Hills.
