2022 AT&T Byron Nelson: Top 10 power rankings at TPC Craig Ranch
The last time we saw Joaquin Niemann, he suffered a bit of bad luck.
Niemann was competing alongside fellow Chilean Mito Pereira at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The promising young duo was one of the favorites to win the two-man team event leading in. They were still in the thick of things after an opening 67 in foursomes, but Pereira had to withdraw before round two with a back injury.
That meant Niemann had to WD with him.
Little else has gone wrong for Niemann in 2022. He won his second career PGA Tour event in dominating fashion at the Genesis Invitational. If Niemann didn’t cruise on the back nine, it was feasible he could’ve set the tournament 72-hole record. He came up one shy at 19-under.
That was one of three top-10s worldwide this year along with a T-12th in his last start at the RBC Heritage.
Niemann has made three stroke-play cuts in a row and six of the last seven.
The 23-year-old arrives at TPC Craig Ranch for the first time.
Niemann is ninth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained tee to green (1.368). He’s also 16th in birdie average (4.29) and seventh in fairway proximity (29’2”).
Chile’s flag looks similar to Texas’. Maybe that will help Joaquin get a few extra fans on his side this week in the DFW.
Niemann’s finished in the top 10 at Colonial and at the Valero Texas Open. I envision him completing the third leg of the Texas top-10 grand slam this week.
