PGA Championship: Big Names Miss Cut at Southern Hills, Did Tiger?

Some of the biggest golfing names in the World will be packing their bags and heading home after missing the cut at the 2022 PGA Championship.

The second round of the 104th PGA Championship was very much a tale of two stories. Those in the early wave out on Friday morning had to deal with winds anywhere between 20-30 mph which led to challenging scoring conditions. Meanwhile, those who started later in the day were able to plot their way around a course that featured slow greens as they dealt with significantly less wind.

Southern Hills played around three shots over par on average during the morning wave, while those who went out in the afternoon got around in almost an entire stroke less with a +2.18 scoring average.

Did Tiger Woods make the cut?

Tiger struggled throughout his round but he battled back as he so often has. Woods played his first nine holes at even par, recording one birdie and one bogey for an outward tally of 35. The journey around the back nine was a bit more lively with Tiger birdieing the par 4, 10th, before immediately giving two shots back with a double-bogey on the par 3, 11th.

The four-time PGA Champion made some crucial par saves coming in and birdied both the 13th and 16th to finish with an inward 34 and a 69 in total.

Who are some of the big names who will miss the weekend at the PGA Championship?

Masters Champion Scottie Scheffler is one of the more surprising omissions from this weekend’s action. Scheffler shot over par on both days for the first time this year. Scottie, who has racked up four wins already in 2022, was right on the cutline as he made his way to the last, but a costly double bogey on the difficult 18th essentially ended any thoughts of being around for the weekend.

Two-time Major winner Dustin Johnson was another player who struggled over the course of the two days. Johnson has had mixed results so far in 2022 with three top 10 finishes and now three missed cuts after failing to make the weekend at the Southern Hills. The 2020 Masters champion fired two rounds of 73 to finish off his week at six-over-par.

Other notable names who won’t be around for the weekend include Patrick Cantlay who had a very difficult week with rounds of 76 and 75 for an eleven-over-par tally and Daniel Berger who recorded a three-over 73 on Thursday before slumping to an 80 on Friday.

2020 PGA champion Collin Morikawa made it through on the number after signing off with 72s on both days. 2021 Masters winner Hideki Matsuyama will also be around for the weekend after he also recorded 72 on both Thursday and Friday.

Will Zalatoris has been sensational this week through two rounds and after beginning the day one shot back he will take the lead into Saturday after posting a 65 in round two. He takes a one-shot lead over Mito Pereira (-8) and a three-shot lead over Justin Thomas (-6) through two rounds.
