After his statement win in Canada Rory McIlroy is the clear favorite heading into 2022’s third major, the 122nd U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline.

The chaotic week that was has finally come to a conclusion and that means it’s time to turn the focus toward the 2022 U.S. Open.

Rory McIlroy’s statement win in Canada on Sunday has resulted in him taking the solo lead in the odds market after sharing that position with Scottie Scheffler at the top last week. Scottie Scheffler follows just behind along with Jon Rahm who has seen his odds to win cut from +1500 to +1200.

Meanwhile, Justin Thomas, who did just about everything he possibly could have done to win the RBC Canadian Open if not for an unworldly performance by McIlroy, can be found at +1400 to win back-to-back majors.

The rest of the current top-listed favorites for the 122nd U.S. Open over on WynnBet shakes out like this:

Favorites to win the 2022 U.S. Open

  • Collin Morikawa  (+2000)

  • Jordan Spieth  (+2500)
  • Matthew Fitzpatrick (+2500)
  • Patrick Cantlay  (+2500)
  • Will Zalatoris  (+2500)

Dustin Johnson and a group of others that competed in the inaugural LIV event in the UK will make the trip back across the pond for the third major of the year, something that should only add extra spice to one of the biggest events on the golfing calendar.

Early picks to win the 122nd U.S. Open

Joaquin Niemann (+3000)

The last three U.S. Opens have seen players breakthrough for their first major victory. Jon Rahm won last year at Torrey Pines, Bryson DeChambeau in 2020 at Winged Foot, and Gary Woodland in 2019 at Pebble Beach.

Niemann could very well be the next player on that list. The talented Chilean has had a breakout year already after winning the Genesis Invitational in February and picking up a 3rd place finish in his last start at the prestigious Memorial tournament.

The 23-year-old has finishes of 23rd and 31st in his last two U.S. Open appearances and he is an elite ball-striker having gained strokes off the tee in every start since the RSM Classic last November, something that will be vitally important in order to succeed this week.

Daniel Berger (+5000)

Daniel Berger has the skillset required to succeed in difficult U.S. Open conditions and after a 5th place showing at the Memorial tournament in his last start, he is showing positive signs heading into the 2022 U.S. Open.

It seems as though it is only a matter of time before the talented 29-year-old has that breakthrough and wins a major. He was 7th at last year’s U.S. Open and in two previous starts in East Coast, U.S. Opens, Berger has finishes of 34th (Winged Foot) and 6th (Shinnecock).

Finding fairways and hitting greens is always important, especially at a U.S. Open where the conditions are difficult and the rough can be gnarly.

Berger ranks 15th in driving accuracy and 14th in strokes gained approach this season, and he has gained strokes off the tee in each of his last six starts.
