Hideki Matsuyama comes to the 3M Open for the second time. In his first go-round at TPC Twin Cities, he posted 64-70-66-68 to take T-7th in 2019. For the week, Matsuyama was fourth in the field in strokes gained approach (7.042) and 10th in SG tee to green (8.797) while hitting nearly 80% of greens in regulation.

The Japanese star is the top-ranked player from the Official World Golf Ranking this week. He held firm at No. 14 after a T-68th last week at The Open Championship. It wasn’t the week the 2021 Masters champion was looking for, but he closed strong on Sunday with a seven-birdie 67.

At St. Andrews, Matsuyama gained 1.89 strokes around the green and 2.28 on approach for the week but had yet another poor putting week. Fortunately for him, the 3M Open’s greens are far smaller and less undulating.

The 30-year-old is twice a winner on the PGA Tour this season.

He won last fall at the Zozo Championship and in January at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Matsuyama’s got three top-10s since then, including fourth at the U.S. Open. He made the cut in all four majors.

Matsuyama ranks third on the PGA Tour in SG approach per round (.911) and is 10th in SG tee to green (1.314). He should hit plenty of fairways this week and is sixth in proximity playing from the short grass (29’2”).

Matsuyama is also 10th in par-breakers, doing so on nearly a quarter of his holes (24.34%).
