Dustin Johnson claims massive prize as LIV Individual Champion
By Sean McCann
It’s crazy to think that LIV Golf is close to wrapping up its inaugural season, but here we are. Against all odds, and facing plenty of doubt, Greg Norman and his team were able to successfully launch and manage the PGA Tour’s newest rival.
With a stacked field and plenty of money to spend, the new Tour has all the ingredients to be a mainstay in the golfing world for a long time. This is in large part thanks to its stars like Dustin Johnson.
The LIV Golf regular season has just wrapped up in Bangkok, with the Tour’s Bangkok invitational won by young phenom Eugenio Lopez-Charra and his Fireballs GC. Certainly a monumental victory for Lopez-Charra, who is new to the professional stage.
But the real victory came courtesy of American star Dustin Johnson. DJ finished the event at -9 which was good enough for 16th place and this season’s individual title on the LIV Tour. What would the prize be for this? Oh, just a simple $18 million.
With two events left in their inaugural season, Dustin Johnson has already collected $30 million. Yes, you read that right. That is not even including the reported $125 million he received just for signing on with LIV Golf.
Dustin Johnson wins LIV’s Individual title
Dustin Johnson remained humble when speaking about this feat, focusing instead on the sport and not the money.
"“Locking up the individual competition is big. It’s an honor to be LIV’s first individual season champion.” – Dustin Johnson"
Greg Norman also used the opportunity to praise his prized golfer and all that he has done for LIV Golf thus far saying:
"“The first chapter of LIV Golf’s history could not be written without Dustin Johnson’s name. By any measure, DJ is among the elite players in the world. From the start, he’s been a LIV Golf cornerstone. He has more than lived up to his billing and he deserves immense credit for clinching LIV’s first individual season title.”"
This is yet another accolade added to Johnson’s famed career. During his time on the PGA Tour, the American was a 2-time Major Champion, the 2016 PGA of America Player of the Year, and the 2020 FedEx Cup Champion. What remains to be seen is where this recent accomplishment ranks on his own personal list.
4 Aces Team Captain Dustin Johnson and his elite squad which includes Patrick Reed, Talor Gooch, and Pat Perez, have dominated the LIV Golf circuit this season. The 4 Aces have won four times in only six events.
Pat Perez, who is noticeably the weakest among the group, has shot a combined +4 in 4 starts this year, finishing no better than 16th in any event. Still, he has collected $3 million so far. Say what you want about LIV Golf, but that appears to be a heck of a career move by Pat Perez.
Now that Dustin Johnson has locked up the individual LIV Golf title, the rest of the field can look forward to this weekend’s upcoming event in Jeddah. The second and third-place spots are still up for grabs, with players like Patrick Reed and Cameron Smith coming in as the current favorites.
After Jeddah, the season championship will take place at the revered Blue Monster at Trump National in Miami. Set to begin on October 28th, it will be competing with the PGA Tour’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course.
It is sure to be another exciting couple of weeks in the golfing world, so let’s have some fun.
