2023 Ryder Cup Watch: U.S. Open Winner Books Ticket To Rome
The first two names who will comprise part of the twelve-man U.S. Team at the Ryder Cup have been announced.
The 2023 Ryder Cup is set to take place in Rome, Italy, in less than two months now with the American Team looking to win on European soil for the first time in 30 years.
Twelve of the world’s best players will represent the Stars and Stripes at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club Sept. 29 – Oct. 1st. The Americans will aim to hold on to the historic cup after their dominant win at Whistling Straits in 2021.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was the first to secure his spot on the U.S. team and on Monday it was announced that this year’s U.S. Open winner, Wyndham Clark, would also be making the trip to Rome in late September to represent his country.
Wyndham Clark’s breakout season will continue at the Ryder Cup in Rome.
The 29-year-old Clark has had a career year in 2023 after earning his first win on the PGA Tour at the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship and his first Major at last month’s U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club.
Officially earning his place on Captain Zach Johnson’s team prior to the PGA’s regular season even reaching a conclusion is further testament to the stellar golf that Clark has been playing throughout this season.
Understandably, Clark was delighted to have secured his place at this year’s Ryder Cup.
Clark will join an elite group of players and Major Champions who will make the journey to Italy this Autumn. Four more automatic qualifying spots on the U.S. Ryder Cup team are still to be decided as the season draws to a close.
As things stand, the remaining automatic qualifying spots based on the U.S. Ryder Cup points standings would go to 2023 Open Champion Brian Harman (3rd), PGA Champion Brooks Koepka (4th), Xander Schauffele (5th), and Patrick Cantlay (6th).
Those who find themselves outside of the top six automatic qualifying spots still have an opportunity to work their way into the team until the completion of the second FedEx Cup Playoff event, the 2023 BMW Championship at Olympia Fields.
The six remaining spots on the roster will be decided by U.S. Captain Zach Johnson following the Tour Championship.
