Just a little under one month removed from claiming his first PGA Tour victory, albeit in the team event alongside Andrew Novak at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Ben Griffin now has the first solo win of his career at this level, holding off Matti Schmid by a single stroke to take the title at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
Entering the final round tied with Schmid atop the leaderboard, the North Carolina native got off to a sizzling start at Colonial Country Club on Sunday, making an eagle at the par-5 first and following up with a birdie at the par-4 second to take a three-shot lead.
The lead was two at the turn, and Griffin kept himself in front with some clutch par saves in the middle of his second nine, making lengthy putts at Nos. 14 and 15.
Schmid pulled to within one with a birdie at the par-3 16th, where Griffin made a bogey, but a bogey at the par-4 17th following a questionable decision from a greenside bunker left the German two back heading into the final hole.
Neither found the green in regulation on the 18th, as Griffin left himself an awkward chip, which he hit beautifully to about four feet. Meanwhile, Schmid went long and left, leaving himself in a position where he had to hole out for birdie to have any chance at a playoff. And lo and behold, that's exactly what he did.

But Griffin was unphased by the theatrics and calmly walked up and knocked in his par effort to secure the victory, thus collecting the biggest paycheck of his career at $1.71 million while also moving into fifth place in the FedEx Cup standings.
Schmid picked up a solid second-place prize, earning $1.035 million.
