While the PGA Tour event now known as The CJ Cup Byron Nelson doesn't hold the status it once did, the 2025 edition at least featured world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who was the only top-10 player from the Official World Golf Ranking in the field and one of just two in the top 20, the other being 20th-ranked Sungjae Im.
And as it turns out, TPC Craig Ranch will serve as the venue where, barring some sort of catastrophic meltdown or injury, the Dallas resident will pick up his first victory of the 2025 PGA Tour season.
Scheffler, who skipped his hometown event last year due to the birth of his son, got off to a blistering start on Thursday, making eight birdies and an eagle to open with a 10-under 61.
And despite a six-plus-hour delay that began right smack dab in the middle of his second round, he carded six birdies after play resumed on Friday en route to an 8-under 63. His 124-stroke total was the second-lowest 36-hole score in PGA Tour history, trailing only Justin Thomas' 123 at the 2017 Sony Open in Hawaii.
Scheffler recorded his first two bogeys of the week during Saturday's third round but also added seven birdies to finish with a 5-under 66.
At 23-under for the week, he'll take an eight-shot lead over Erik van Rooyen, Adam Schenk, and Ricky Castillo into Sunday's final round, marking the biggest 54-hole advantage in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event since Rory McIlroy held the same eight-shot lead heading into the final round of the 2011 U.S. Open.
For those wondering, the largest 54-hole lead ever lost on the PGA Tour is six shots. So, again, barring some historic meltdown, Scheffler has this tourney in the bag. Now, let's have a look at the paycheck he'll add to his bank account.
2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson payouts
The 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson features a total purse of $9.9 million, which is one of the higher figures for a non-Signature Event or major championship.
The winner's share (Scottie's share) this year is $1.782 million, which is up slightly from the $1.71 million Taylor Pendrith collected a season ago. But Scheffler won't be the only player earning seven figures, as the second-place finisher (assuming it's a solo second, anyway) will pocket $1.079 million.
