Scottie Scheffler knocks LIV player down a peg, hits milestone matched only by Tiger

Scottie Scheffler now has spent the third-most weeks in the No. 1 spot of the Official World Golf Ranking.

As wild as it may sound, Scottie Scheffler has almost been an afterthought during the early months of this 2025 PGA Tour season.

Of course, much of that can be attributed to what Rory McIlroy has accomplished this year, taking titles at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Players Championship before completing the career Grand Slam at The Masters.

But here's the thing.

McIlroy's incredible run actually shed light on just how dominant Scheffler has been over the last two years. Because despite everything Rory has done the past few months, Scottie has still maintained the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking.

That's how big of a lead he built up, a lead aided by a ridiculous nine wins in 2024 alone, a list that includes The Players, The Masters, the Olympics, and the Tour Championship.

And while Scheffler has yet to win this season, a season that started late, by the way, due to the hand injury he suffered on Christmas Day, it's not as if he's performed poorly. In eight starts in 2025, he's only finished lower than 11th twice and has thrice finished inside the top four, taking solo fourth at Augusta, tying for third at The Genesis, and tying for second in Houston.

And he hasn't even played his best golf yet.

If Rory wins next month's PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, a venue where he's already earned four victories during his career, we could soon be having a different conversation. However, as things currently stand, Scheffler remains the No. 1 player in the world.

And in that regard, he's now joined Tiger Woods in a highly exclusive club.

Scottie Scheffler is just the second player to hold the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking for 100 consecutive weeks

Scheffler has now sat in the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking for 100 consecutive weeks, becoming just the second player in history to reach that milestone.

Technically speaking, this is the third instance in which someone has hit triple digits, as Tiger did it twice. But Scottie still has a long way to go to match those two stretches.

Woods once spent 264 weeks in the top spot from August 1999 to September 2004 and then broke his own record with a 281-week run from June 2005 to August 2010. Absurd, right?

Furthermore, Scheffler has also broken out of a tie with two-time major champ and current LIV Golf member Dustin Johnson and now sits in solo third for the most total weeks spent at No. 1, trailing only Tiger (683) and Greg Norman (331). Johnson is now in fourth at 135, while Rory rounds out the top five at 122.

McIlroy is unable to gain any ground this week, as the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, the only team event on the PGA Tour schedule, does not award OWGR points. Scheffler will attempt to extend his lead over Rory when he next tees it up at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch on May 1.
