Viktor Hovland didn't come to the 2025 edition of the Valspar Championship with a lot of confidence.
Winless on the PGA Tour since his victory at the 2023 Tour Championship, the Norweigan superstar had failed to make the cut in his last three starts coming into the week, a stretch that featured a first-round 80 at The Players Championship.
That's not the kind of golf you want to be playing when attempting to tame one of the toughest tracks on the PGA Tour in the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook.
But such is the beauty of golf.
After three solid rounds of 70, 67, and 69 on the par-71 layout at Copperhead to open his week, Hovland entered Sunday's final round sharing the lead at 7-under with Jacob Bridgeman and Nico Echavarria.
But even in shooting 2-under through his first 13 holes, Hovland seemed destined to continue his winless drought, as he trailed Justin Thomas by three strokes with five to play.
Thomas, who has a drought of his own going, having recorded zero victories since the 2022 PGA Championship, began his day two shots back of the lead but vaulted up the leaderboard with seven birdies against no bogeys through his first 15 holes to get to 12-under.
But as it's done to so many players over the years, the daunting "Snake Pit" got the better of JT, as he bogeyed two of the final three holes, thus finishing the week at 10-under.
Hovland, meanwhile, got hot exactly when he needed to, making birdies at 14, 16, and 17 to take a two-shot lead. He made a bogey at the 18th, but it ultimately proved inconsequential, as he held on for a one-shot victory, shooting a 4-under round of 67 to finish the tournament at 11-under.
In capturing his seventh PGA Tour title, Hovland collected the $1.566 million winner's share of the $8.7 million purse and moved back into the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking, jumping from 19th to eighth.
He also earned a much-needed 500 FedEx Cup points, moving him into the top 30 in the season-long standings at No. 26.
