For the second time this season Torrey Pines hosted a PGA Tour event. Three weeks after Harris English's triumphant victory at this iconic golfing venue, it was the turn of the Genesis Invitational, the third of eight signature events in 2025.
Relocated this year from Riviera Country Club due to the tragic wildfires in the Los Angeles area, the 2025 Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines welcomed an elite field led by World No.1 Scottie Scheffler and last year's Genesis Invitational champion Hideki Matsuyama. The 2021 Masters winner shot a 9-under 62 in the final round last year at Riviera to come from behind and claim the title. The Japanese star could join an elite list of twelve other players to have won the Genesis on two different occasions if he were to successfully defend his title this year at Torrey Pines.
Matsuyama would need to hold off a loaded field of contenders eager to capture this year's title for themselves, however, and with players like Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Aberg, and Justin Thomas teeing it up at the scenic Torrey Pines alongside Matsuyama, the quest to repeat would be no easy task; made even more challenging by the grueling conditions this year's field faced in the opening round of the Genesis Invitational. Hideki, alongside many others, succumbed to the brutal conditions in the opening round and at the end of the day did well to post a 2-over 74 on a day that saw just thirteen players break par.
With scoring in the early part of the 2025 Genesis Invitational averaging two strokes over par, Matsuyama and others seemingly had their work cut out for them just to make this year's cut at Torrey Pines. That would be the aim before any dreams of lifting this year's title come Sunday evening could be realized. With all of that being said, exactly how many will make this year's cut Torrey Pines, though? Let's take a look at the cut rules for this year's championship, some of the historic cut lines at the Genesis Invitational in recent years, and the latest cut line projections to try and determine what this year's cut line might be and who might be in danger of missing out.
How many players make the cut at the Genesis Invitational in 2025?
While one of the eight signature events on this year's PGA Tour schedule, the Genesis Invitational is unique in that it will implement a cut at the halfway point. The top 50 players and ties after 36 holes will make it safely through to the weekend at this year's Genesis Invitational. Additionally, any player within ten strokes of the leader at the halfway mark will also make this year's cut at Torrey Pines. Unlike at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am where every player in the field was guaranteed all four rounds, and the majority of other signature events on the schedule, the Genesis Invitational represents one of three signature events to implement a cut, joining the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Memorial Tournament which will have similar rules later in the season. The 2025 Genesis Invitational welcomed a field of 72 players to Torrey Pines, a number that will at least be partially reduced following the completion of the second round of this year's championship.
What has the cut line previously been at the Genesis Invitational?
The cut line at last year's Genesis Invitational, won by Hideki Matsuyama, was +1. Here is a look at the last five editions of the Genesis Invitational and some of the historic cut lines in recent years.
Year of Tournament | Cut Line |
---|---|
2024 Genesis Invitational | +1 |
2023 Genesis Invitational | +1 |
2022 Genesis Invitational | E |
2021 Genesis Invitational | E |
2020 Genesis Invitational | +1 |
Looking back at the Genesis Invitational cut line in recent years shows a consistent trend of the number either falling on +1 or even par. It's interesting to note that the cut line at last year's Genesis Invitational fell in line with previous editions of the event despite seeing a significantly reduced field for the first time. 2025 will mark the third year in a row that the Genesis Invitational has held either signature or designated event status.
Genesis Invitational cut line projection: What will the cut be in 2025?
With the first round of this year's Genesis Invitational officially in the books, Data Golf is projecting a +5 cut line and giving it around a 35% chance of coming to fruition. Obviously, at a different locale in 2025, it's reasonable to expect a different cut line from what we have seen historically at the Genesis Invitational. A cut line of +5 would incredibly match the mark from the 2021 U.S. Open held at Torrey Pines. As things stand, the current projections give the cut line falling back to +6 a 33% probability while the number shifting to +4 in difficult conditions is far less likely at only around a 14% chance. The projected cut line of +5 could spell bad news for players including Rickie Fowler, Sepp Straka, Cameron Young, and 2024 Farmers Insurance Open winner at Torrey Pines, Matthieu Pavon, to name a few. Additionally, it could leave players like Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Max Homa, and Tony Finau with seemingly little room for error moving forward.
