Grant Thornton Invitational format, purse, prize money
For the second year in a row, the Grant Thornton Invitational will implement a unique format across all three days of this year's tournament. The 32 mixed teams will begin round 1 of this year's event playing a scramble, a format where every player hits their tee shot before choosing the best shot to hit from next. From there each player will hit their selected second shot before choosing the best third shot to hit from next. The process continues until the ball is holed.
Teams will compete in what is arguably the most challenging format in team golf in round 2, Foursomes, also known as Alternate Shot. This format is used regularly in team events including the Ryder Cup, Solheim Cup, and Presidents Cup, and is challenging because each team plays only one golf ball on each hole alternating shots as the name suggests. Often teams will decide who tees off on the odd-numbered holes with the other team member teeing off on the even-numbered holes, alternating between shots until the golf ball is holed.
Round 3 will feature a modified Four-Ball format, also known as Best Ball, another common format in team events. Traditionally, each player would play their own golf ball in this format from tee to green with the best score on the hole between both players being recorded for the team. The modified Four-Ball format is similar with the main difference being players will each tee off with their own golf balls before then playing their partner's golf ball until the golf ball is holed. The team will then record the best score between them.
