After an exhilarating first round at TPC Craig Ranch on Thursday that saw world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler fire a 10-under 61, the action at the 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson came to a screeching halt on Friday, as storms in the Dallas area suspended play for more than six hours.
When play finally resumed at just past 4:00 local time, 78 of the 156 players in the full-field event had yet to start their second rounds, and many had their tee times pushed back all the way to Saturday morning.
As such, we obviously won't know precisely how many players will make it through to the final two rounds until everyone completes their second 18, but what we do know is that everyone who does make the cut will be chasing Scheffler, who followed up his 61 with an 8-under 63 to get to 18-under for the week, marking the best 36-hole start of his career.
Scheffler, of course, has yet to win this season but has certainly put himself in a great position to do so this weekend (or maybe Monday). Over his first 36 holes, the two-time Masters champ carded 14 birdies and two eagles against zero bogeys.
2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson cut rules
As is the norm with most full-field events on the PGA Tour schedule, the top 65 players and ties after two rounds will play the final 36 holes.
Since this event was moved to TPC Craig Ranch in 2021, the lowest the cut line has been was in 2023 at 4-under, which is the current projection at the time of this writing. But don't be surprised if it ends up at 5-under, which it was in 2022, or 6-under, which it was in 2021 and 2024, when all is said and done.
Jordan Spieth was on the bubble for quite a while but should be okay, as he closed out his second round with a birdie to get to 6-under.
Once the cut occurs, one would think split tees will be used for Saturday's third round, with the hope being to get as close to back on schedule to ensure the final round is completed on Sunday.
