Mysterious season for Gaby Lopez on brink of abrupt ending
As the LPGA season is wrapping up many players have captured the headlines. Players such as Nelly Korda, Rose Zhang, and Lexi Thompson have been a huge part of this season. However, there are many other players who have stepped up and are looking to make some waves in the final tournaments of the year. One of those players is Mexican-born, Gaby Lopez.
This season, Lopez has eight top 25s including a top 10 recently at the Kroger Queen City Championship where she finished in seventh place in early September. Lopez is looking to stay in the top 60 in the Race to CME Globe rankings as she continues to compete for the rest of the season.
She currently stands in the pivotal 60th-place position. The top 60 golfers get to compete in the Tour Championship in Naples, Florida. Her tie for seventeenth place finish at the Buick LPGA Shanghai kept her in that 60th place ranking.
Since the FM Championship at the end of August, Gaby Lopez has placed within the top 25 in three out of four events.
In fact, her worst showing in those four events was a tie for 27th at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship two weeks ago. She qualified for her third straight Olympics this past summer. She was in a tie for third place after the first round after birdieing the final three holes. She finished the Olympics in a tie for 29th place.
On the year, she currently ranks in 27th place for Greens in Regulation with a percentage of 71.34%. She has 253 birdies on the year which ranks in 17th place. Lopez can only hope to keep these statistics up if she wishes to finish off the year in the top 60.
Speaking about her opening round at the Olympics Lopez said: "You got to be optimistic; you got to think that good things are coming your way and turn everything that comes your way into a positive, and we'll see." She is set to tee it off this weekend at the BMW Ladies Championship.
Having a positive attitude and continuing her late-season push should allow her to be at the Tour Championship. Lopez's competitive nature could also drive her toward her first victory on tour since the Dana Open in 2022.
