What a week it was at The Open Championship for Billy Horschel.

He battled back from a 1-over-par 72 to open his week at Royal Troon by posting 68-69 to take a one-shot lead into Sunday. It was a crowded leaderboard, though, with 2024 major champions Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele lurking closely behind.

If you told Horschel he’d card a 3-under 68 on Sunday, he likely would have taken it. That would have been enough to get the job done if it wasn’t for the hard charge of Schauffele, who mounted a bogey-free 65.

Horschel and Justin Rose shared second place two shots back.

“We’ll look back on this in an hour, I'll be very happy with how I played, I'll be very happy with what I did this week,” Horschel was transcribed by ASAP Sports. “I did a lot of great things that I can take on to the next few years of majors, and hopefully one of these will be my time to step through the door and hold one of them.”

The former Florida Gator was 27th or higher in the field in all Strokes Gained categories, including fourth on approach (7.45).

Horschel looked like he had plenty of course knowledge to build from at last year’s 3M Open.

However, that was actually his tournament debut. In his first round ever at TPC Twin Cities, he posted a 5-under 66 to get into contention. He followed with 67-68-70 to post T-13th.

“I've watched this tournament on TV the last two years and heard some of the feedback from players and they rave about the golf course and the condition that it's in,” Horschel was transcribed by Tee Scripts in 2023. “It's been unbelievable.”

Horschel was seventh in the field in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (3.571) and T-6th in scrambling (80%). The fact that he had to scramble 20 times, though, kept him from making a charge on the weekend.
