Xander Schauffele is looking to do one better this year after a solo runner-up finish at the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship.

He posted 66-69-64-70 for a 269 total that would have won outright or at least reached a playoff every year since 2015.

Schauffele is beginning to get the hang of Quail Hollow. He missed the cut in his course debut at the 2017 PGA Championship.

A T-72nd at the 2018 PGA Tour event here was nothing to write home about, but T-14th (72-71-68-71) in 2021 followed by last year’s stellar play is promising. Not to mention, he starred with a 3-1-0 record here at the 2022 Presidents Cup.

“Yeah, you've got to be in the fairway,” Schauffele said in a 2023 Tee Scripts transcription. “The rough isn't as penalizing as it is normally when it's bermuda or in the past when it was a little bit longer. With how long the course is, for most of us you have to be in the fairway to attack.”

Schauffele comes in off a week of rest following T-23rd with Patrick Cantlay at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

The Californian has racked up tons of high finishes this season. Schauffele owns seven top-10s, including T-2nd at the Players Championship where he was in the mix on Sunday.

He backdoored his way into solo eighth at the Masters, but it pays all the same.

Schauffele ranks third on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Total (1.75). He’s a chameleon who has the skill set to compete at all venues.

This week where brawn is rewarded, Schauffele can lean on driver. He’s 10th in SG: Off-the-Tee (.637) and third in SG: Tee-to-Green (1.435).
