Charles Schwab Challenge payout distribution 2024: Purse, winner's prize money
The PGA Tour returned to Texas this week for the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge. Sadly, a devastating tragedy took place over the weekend as the PGA Tour announced that Grayson Murray had passed away at just 30 years old. The shocking news came after Murray had withdrawn from the event during his second round citing an illness.
The heartbreaking and untimely passing came just months after Grayson Murray had won for the second time on the PGA Tour at January's Sony Open in Hawaii. The PGA Tour and Commissioner Jay Monahan released the following statement on Saturday:
"We were devastated to learn – and are heartbroken to share – that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said.
“The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones."
Players and members of the golf world reached out after hearing of the tragic news on Saturday, sending out messages of support for Murray's family and loved ones.
In the statement issued by the PGA Tour on Saturday, Commissioner Jay Monahan expressed how the wishes of Murray's family were that the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge continued with play.
“I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play,” Commissioner Monahan continued. “They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”
In search of his first solo win on the PGA Tour and first win since the 2023 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, 27-year-old Davis Riley continued his exceptional play on Moving Day at this year's Charles Schwab Challenge. Riley recorded a 4-under 66 in the third round at Colonial Country Club after rounds of 66 and 64 across the first two days in Fort Worth had seen him leading the way.
Riley would attempt to hold off a hard-charging Scottie Scheffler on Sunday whose round of 7-under 63 on Moving Day at Colonial ensured the World No.1 was in contention during a final round once again. Riley would take a four-shot lead over Scheffler and a lead of five over two others, Pierceson Coody and Hayden Buckley, into the final round. In addition to the tartan jacket awarded to the champion every year, a trophy, a classic car or truck, this year a 1975 Corvette Stingray, the Charles Schwab Challenge champion also takes home a handsome payday. Here is a look at the purse and prize money on the line this year at Colonial.
Charles Schwab Challenge 2024: Total purse and winner's prize money
The purse for the Charles Schwab Challenge is set at $9.1 million for 2024 with this year's champion at Colonial taking home $1.638 million in prize money; the PGA Tour standard of 18% of the overall purse. The $9.1 million on offer in Texas is up from each of the last two year's purses of $8.7 and $8.4 million respectively, less than the CJ Cup Byron Nelson purse a few weeks ago, and about on par with the Texas Children's Houston Open and Valero Texas Open events earlier this season.

The purses on the PGA Tour this season continue to impress. While not one of the select signature events this season, the Charles Schwab Challenge will still reward its top finishers handsomely in 2024 with the Top 22 all taking home six figures and the Top 10 earning over $245k.
In addition to booking their spot in the next signature event, the Memorial Tournament in a couple of weeks (if not previously exempt already), along with everything else that comes with winning an event on the PGA Tour, this year's Charles Schwab Challenge winner will also earn a crucial 500 FedEx Cup points in the season-long race to East Lake and the 2024 Tour Championship this Autumn.
