The year's final major championship officially got underway on Thursday in the early morning hours as Royal Troon welcomed the 152nd edition of the Open Championship. As the best players in the world congregated in Scotland for the right to claim the iconic Claret Jug, they were met with a rude welcome. With the wind whipping off of the Firth Of Clyde, carnage ensued.
No more than a handful of players found themselves under par as the afternoon wave began their championship. While 2022 PGA Champion Justin Thomas set the early pace following an exceptional 3-under 68 in the challenging conditions, many of the games' best players including Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, Tommy Fleetwood, and Max Homa, to name a few, struggled on day one of this year's Open Championship.
Of course, a handful of major champions and big-name players were still to go out in the afternoon, amongst them, a certain Tiger Woods, who was making just his fifth start of the year and his first since last month's U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. Woods got off to a solid start with a couple of pars and a birdie on the card, but for as much as his play was understandably the focus for many fans, it wasn't what had them talking early on.
Golf commentator leaves fans stunned after shocking Tiger Woods remark
A part of this year's Open Championship afternoon featured group coverage alongside Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, fans were treated with getting to watch every single shot from Tiger Woods during his first round, unfortunately, for those who were listening to the group's commentary team, part of Woods' early round action also included an absolutely outrageous comment by one of the commentary team members.
🎙️Featured groups announcers on Tiger Woods: “You look at the eyes, you gotta think there’s a lot of painkillers being taken.”

Thoughts on this?

During the coverage, one of the Open Championship's commentary members commented on Tiger Woods' eyes and then speculated on the amounts of painkillers that Woods may or may not be taking to help him get through the round. Understandably, the egregious remark left many fans and listeners flabbergasted.
Absolutely insane thing to say out loud pic.twitter.com/1WIJ3aBrYQ

So we’re just accusing Tiger Woods of popping a bunch of pain killers based on ‘the look in his eyes’ nowadays?💀 pic.twitter.com/8A2ezzv9UE

@NBCSports how in the world does this crew get assigned to the Tiger woods group? One of the worst broadcasts I have ever heard. Saying tigers eyes look like he’s on painkillers and then this lady saying the Ryder cup is an awful experience .. Do better

A little bit odd for Mark Roe to just come out and say that. Not all the silences have to be filled#TigerWoods#OpenChampionship https://t.co/lMMjt7faYb

Tiger Woods will rightfully be the focus for as long he decides to continue to tee it up in golf's majors or any other event, and while many have speculated of late about how much longer he will continue to play, that's completely up to him and nobody else.
It's certainly not the job of members of commentary to make completely speculative and irresponsible remarks while on air just to fill the space.
Sometimes it is better to say nothing at all.
