Lauren Coughlin contending at Chevron Championship following pivotal change
Sometimes taking a leap of faith and finding a new career can work out. It seems that way at the Chevron Championship for Lauren Coughlin and her husband.
Her husband, John Pond recently quit his job to become Coughlin's full-time caddie. Now they are among the leaders at the LPGA's first major, the Chevron Championship. Coughlin was leading the way after the first round after shooting 6-under par.
During the second round, Coughlin recorded an eagle on the 8th hole at the Woodlands before dropping two shots on the back nine and signing for a 1-over 73. She currently is tied for 5th place going into Saturday's third round.
Lauren Coughlin has been a regular on the Tour since 2021
In 2023, Coughlin had a great showing at the CPKC Women's Open finishing tied for sixth place. Her husband, Pond, quit his job to begin full-time caddying for her. He was a former University of Virginia Football player. Per Jack Hirsch, of Golf.com, Pond is on a three-week trial run as her full-time caddie.
During the period while he's been the caddie, she tied for eighth place at the Ford Championship. Now he seems to have more of a permanent role and it seems to be paying off.
On Thursday, during the 1st round of the Chevron Championship, Coughlin recorded a bogey-free round shooting a 66. She birdied holes on 2, 4, 5, 10, 11 and 18. She was two shots up on Nelly Korda at the time who has won her last four tournaments coming into the year's first major championship.
In the article with Hirsch, Coughlin commented that 'there is no one better than her husband who can keep her cool and relaxed while she is playing.'
It seems to be paying off during the year's first Major.
If the couple keeps up their calming demeanor on the course, it could be Coughlin's best finish in her career. The tournament concludes this Saturday and Sunday.
