Ask Scottie Scheffler: What’s Better Than Winning The Masters? Winning Two of Them.
“I think so, yeah,” Scheffler said in his pre-tournament interview at RBC Heritage on Hilton Head Island. “I think whenever you're able to do it again, I think it's really special. I don't know if validation is the right word for the first one, but doing something like that twice is very special, and so there's definitely a good bit of satisfaction in accomplishing that.”
And he said it matter-of-factly, without any bragging.
After winning, he did all the champion things that happen at Augusta National, then got on a plane with several people and flew back home to Dallas. It was between 1 and 2 AM when they arrived. His wife picked him up at the airport.
That’s when Scottie Scheffler did something out of the ordinary.
He celebrated. There was a tavern that stayed open late, so they all decided to go.
“I don't remember who suggested it, but it seemed like a good idea, and when Meredith picked us up at the airport it still seemed like a good idea, and Meredith was down, so we went for probably 20 minutes,” he explained. “Took a few photos, had a drink and then went home and went to bed.”
The entourage included his manager Blake Smith, his coach Randy Smith, and four good friends.
“I don't know if I'd actually been to that place before,” he said. There was one nearby that he had gone to on occasion. “Shockingly it wasn't open Sunday at 1:30 in the morning. This place was open.”
They were out by the time the tavern closed, which was 2 AM.
As far as the victory goes, Scheffler said he wanted to win the tournament “really badly” for several reasons.
“I wanted to put the green jacket back on. I wanted to be able to have that plane ride home with the jacket,” he said. “It's kind of weird living through those times in your life where you're dreamt about having moments like that and then all of a sudden, they're happening.”
He can’t wait to wear the jacket at home. Like in his house.
Then, he hopes to wear it to some sporting events around Dallas.
“The Rangers won the World Series last year, the Mavs are playing some good basketball, Stars are heading into the Playoffs, as well, so I'd like to go to some more games,” he said rather wistfully.
Then the Schefflers celebrated again Monday night by having some friends over to their house. They ordered out, and shared pictures from Sunday night.
“Nothing crazy,” Scheffler noted.
Unless you call winning the Masters for the second time crazy.
