The PGA Tour has a lot on its plates these days with the emergence of the LIV Tour, players departing for said tour, and the seemingly never-ending negotiations with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) over a potential deal between the two organizations. The last thing the tour and Commissioner Jay Monahan need is for one of its crown jewels to come under scrutiny on the eve of the event. I'm talking about the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Outside of the Players Championship, the FedEx Cup is the tour's marquee event. This obviously does not include the four major championships which are all operated by different organizations and committees.

The 'season-long race for the FedEx Cup' has long been the slogan for the tour's postseason tournament as the PGA Tour's top players battle it out all season for the right to earn one of the 30 spots that are up for grabs at the Tour Championship; an event that concludes with the crowning of the FedEx Cup champion and the hefty payday that comes with it.

While fans have long questioned the current format due to its lack of excitement and creativity, seldom has it been called out by the players who are compensated handsomely with eye-opening prize purses and spots in the newly-minted signature events. But on the eve of this year's FedEx Cup Playoffs, all of that changed.

Scottie Scheffler is not a fan of the PGA Tour's 'season-long' race for the FedEx Cup

The World No.1 questioning the season's postseason tournament on the eve of the FedEx Cup is less than ideal for the PGA Tour. Scottie Scheffler, speaking ahead of this year's FedEx St. Jude Championship, expressed his opinions about the FedEx Cup, specifically how the current format essentially comes down to one tournament at the end of the year at the Tour Championship.

"Yeah, I mean, I talked about it the last few years. I think it's silly. You can't call it a season-long race and have it come down to one tournament. Hypothetically we get to East Lake and my neck flares up and it doesn't heal the way it did at THE PLAYERS, I finish 30th in the FedExCup because I had to withdraw from the last tournament? Is that really the season-long race? No. It is what it is."

Scheffler would go on to add, that while it's a fun tournament, he doesn't really consider the FedEx Cup to be a 'season-long' race like it's called.

These words from the world's best player will be music to the ears of all those who have criticized the current format in recent years. You can chalk this up as another item on the tour's to-list, 'Fix FedEx Cup'. Check.

Scottie Scheffler will continue to gear up for the closing three weeks of the season as he looks to put a punctuation mark on what's already been a historic season with a FedEx Cup title; one of very few titles he has yet to win in his young career already.

The 2024 FedEx Cup Playoffs begin in Memphis, Tennessee, this week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship before crowning the season's champion at the Tour Championship in a few weeks' time.
