Carnage was promised at Oakmont Country Club, and carnage is exactly what we've gotten through the first 36 holes of the 2025 U.S. Open.

The last time the U.S. Open was contested at Oakmont in 2016, a total of 10 players were under par through the first two rounds. This year, that number has dwindled to just three.

Leading the way is five-time PGA Tour winner Sam Burns, who came into the week owning just one top-10 finish in his 20 previous major championship appearances, that being a tie for ninth at last year's U.S. Open at Pinehurst.

But after opening his week at Oakmont with a 2-over 72, the 28-year-old has put himself in a great position to capture the biggest win of his career, as he fired a blistering 5-under 65 on Friday, carding six birdies against only a single bogey to get to 3-under for the tournament.

Burns came into the season's third major coming off a strong performance at the RBC Canadian Open, taking solo second after losing a playoff to Ryan Fox. He'll enter Saturday's third round at Oakmont as the favorite to win with +330 odds.

Viktor Hovland is one of the few in red figures, following up his first-round 71 with a 2-under 68 to sit in solo third at 1-under. The Norwegian superstar is also looking for his first major championship and will go into Round 3 with the second-shortest odds to win at +550.

First-round leader J.J. Spaun wasn't quite as sharp on Friday as he was during his bogey-free 66 in Round 1, but he still played some solid golf, posting a 2-over 72 to go into the final 36 holes in solo second at 2-under. Spaun heads into Round 3 with the third-shortest odds at +700.

Despite being seven shots out of the lead at 4-over following a second-round 71, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler owns the fourth-shortest odds at +800. And rounding out the top five at +1100 is Ben Griffin, who continues to play great golf and enters the weekend in a tie for fourth at even par.

Also sitting at even is 44-year-old Adam Scott, who sits with the sixth-shortest odds at +1600.

Among those missing the cut were Ludvig Åberg +8), Wyndham Clark (+8), Patrick Cantlay (+8), Lucas Glover +8), Cameron Smith (+8), Phil Mickelson +8), Tommy Fleetwood +9), Dustin Johnson (+10), Joaquín Niemann (+10), Bryson DeChambeau (+10), Sepp Straka (+11), Justin Thomas (+12), Justin Rose (+14), and Shane Lowry (+17).

Despite some visible blowups during an up-and-down round that began with two double bogeys in his first three holes, Rory McIlroy fought back to post a 2-over 72, getting him to the weekend at 6-over.
