9. Hunter Mahan

It’s kind of hard to believe, but Hunter Mahan is already 33 and has played in 40 majors. In fact, Mahan has been good enough and strong enough to play in every major since the 2007 U.S. Open.

In that time span, Mahan has finished in the top ten eight times including finishing in the top three, three times.

Mahan has come close a couple of times, but the closest he came was back in 2013 at the U.S. Open when Mahan and Phil Mickelson were paired up in the final round. Mahan was vying for his first major and Mickelson was vying for the career grand slam. Neither would win.

Mahan started off the round one shot back, but after Mickelson double bogeyed the 5th hole, Mahan found himself in front by two. Mahan would go on to bogey the next hole, while Justin Rose playing a group ahead birdied the next two holes to take the lead.

Mahan wouldn’t see the lead again and the wheels fell off down the stretch as he double bogeyed 15 and bogeyed 17 and 18 to finish at 5-over in a tie for 4th.

Rose went on to win and he got the monkey off his back. At that point, Rose was one of the best golfers without a major championship on his resume.

Mahan had another opportunity at The Open Championship that very year. Mahan found himself just two shots behind Lee Westwood heading into the final round, but he struggled early and finished off the round with another 75.

Mahan is still a high-quality golfer. He hasn’t had the best of 2015’s, but over the last three years he has made the cut in nine of his last twelve majors and has finished in the top ten in four of those majors.
