  • Ireland’s Leona Maguire will be playing her Evian debut as an amateur, but Maguire’s headed for the pro tours just as soon as she finishes her collegiate career on the Duke Blue Devil golf team.

Maguire, along with France’s Mathilda Cappeliez, Switzerland’s Albane Valenzuela and Canada’s Brooke Henderson, received one of the four wild card invitations issued by the Evian Championship organizing committee to players deemed outstanding emerging young talents in the sport.

Maguire is that, indeed, and more. I watched her deliver a champion-level performance at the NCAA Division I Golf Championship even though Emma Talley edged her out of the individual title and even though Maguire wasn’t able to save the Blue Devils from elimination in the match play contest.  Maguire was clearly a standout MVP, continuing to add to the long list of awards and recognitions she’s earned.

She spent her summer vacation testing the pro waters in several Ladies European Tour events.  The 2015 winner of the Mark H. McCormack medal will be teeing it up as the number one amateur in women’s golf.  She’s going to be worth watching, this week and well into the future.
