Danny Willett: What Was in His Bag at The Masters
Danny Willett won The Masters with a bag full of Callaway equipment.
Danny Willett became the first Englishman to win The Masters since Sir Nick Faldo slipped on a green jacket in 1996. Willett was six that year. Claiming his first major championship, Willett became the first European Tour member to win The Masters since Charl Schwartzl took the honors in 2011. The European Tour trumpeted the headline on their website:
Wonderful Willett Triumphs at Masters
How did he do it? By delivering a steady, low-risk version of golf under conditions that left the bulk of the field still hunting red numbers on Sunday afternoon.
Willett’s four rounds – 70, 74, 72, 67 – are nothing short of miraculous in a year when the cut came at 6-over par and there were no sub-par rounds on the third day, when the Englishman carded even par.

Willett, who was ranked 12th in the OWGR when Jordan Spieth held the green jacket for him, started the final round trailing the Texan by three shots. At the turn Spieth had increased his lead to five and looked good for a second wire-to-wire win at Augusta National.
Willett was playing steady. He had made the turn in 34 and on a balmy Sunday he was staying in the short grass and had the feel of the greens. As Spieth started his three-hole meltdown that began on the 10th and resulted in the loss of six shots, Willett kept his head down and played on, ultimately recording a bogey-free 67 that put him three shots clear of Spieth and Lee Westwood.
And that’s how Danny Willett won the 2016 Masters Tournament. What did he have to say about it?
"It’s my wife’s birthday back home today, my son was due today and he came 12 or 13 days early to let me come and play. . .It’s just been a crazy, crazy week. Danny Willett"
