US Open / Meijer LPGA Classic Fantasy Gold Mine
By Sam Belden
PGA Tour Fantasy driven by Avis: Phil Mickelson is playing well enough to make history at Oakmont this week.
Note: There’s no ShotLink in play this week, so the PGA TOUR game is all about overall finish. Things will be back to normal at next week’s Quicken Loans National.
Starters
Rory McIlroy – The Ulsterman was struggling with his putting stroke for much of the early part of the year, so his great performance on the greens at Muirfield Village was a great sign. In terms of finishes, he’s on a run of six top 12s in a row, so he’s rising to the challenge wherever he goes.
Jason Day – When he has his A-game, Day runs circles around the rest of the field, so set your lineup accordingly. He’s logged three wins in his last seven starts, beating elite fields at both Austin Country Club and TPC Sawgrass. He has four career top 10s at the US Open.
Matt Kuchar – This pick only applies if you’ve still got starts remaining – it’s definitely been tempting to automatically slot in Kuchar for the past few weeks. The Georgia Tech product has logged four top six finishes in a row and possesses a balanced skillset that should hold up well at Oakmont.

Phil Mickelson – Trying to complete the career Grand Slam, Mickelson has major boom-or-bust potential this week. He’s notched back-to-back top 20s, including a tie for second at TPC Southwind, but he’s found the top 50 in just two of his last five U.S. Open starts. He’s worth a play here–just make sure you have a solid plan B on your bench.
Bench
Dustin Johnson – The Coastal Carolina product is on an absolute tear, posting six top fives in his last nine starts. He also possesses a strong U.S. Open record–warts and all, he’s a consistent contender.
Adam Scott – He’s kept it low-key since notching back-to-back wins in Florida. Scott has gone without a top 10 over the last three months but does have a trio of top 20s. The PGA Tour leader in strokes gained: tee-to-green, there’s definitely reason for optimism here.
