More from Pro Golf Now

Rather than my usual Golf Links news notes, I decided to review Tommy’s Honour. It’s a simply beautiful film that tells a thickly textured story of the game of golf.

There’s the story of Morris, Senior, the St. Andrews caddie, a proud man, a fine golfer, a firm but loving father and husband, a man locked in his own historical moment.

There’s the story of the game, itself, and it’s painful transition from one social milieu to the next, in its time a brawling game punctuated by sideline drinking and gambling. Many who view it from our 21st century vantage point will struggle to recognize the more temperate game we play.

There’s the story of young Tom, perhaps still the game’s finest golfer, who envisioned a world for himself dramatically different from that his father’s generation had shaped and sustained. Young Tom takes that first, firm, confident, outrageous step into a world that will eventually accommodate and then embrace professional golfers. He led the way for many.

It was Young Tom who won the Challenge Belt three consecutive years and in doing so took possession of it in perpetuity And it was Old Tom who originally laid out the courses that form the backbone of modern links golf.

Tommy’s Honour is a finely crafted film that tells a good story quite well. Don’t miss it.

In honor of the Barbasol, take a look at the full spectrum of golf that’s offered along the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
