Brendon Todd: FedEx Cup Pretender or Contender?
By Tim Letcher
Brendon Todd already has two wins this season. But can he contend for the FedEx Cup title?
Brendon Todd currently finds his name among the leaders in the FedEx Cup standings. Todd is fourth at this point in the season after a surge in November lifted his standing.
The season did not start well for the 34-year-old Todd. He missed the cut in his first four starts this season, and once he did make the cut, he was only able to place in a tie for 28th at the Houston Open.

Then, something clicked. The same guy who missed four cuts in a row suddenly found his game in November. Todd won at the Bermuda Championship, then won again just two weeks later at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. After starting the season with a gigantic thud, Todd was suddenly in the lead in the FedEx Cup standings.
His hot play continued a week later, as he earned a solo fourth place finish at the RSM Classic. A couple of weeks later, he tied for third at the QBE Shootout.
Since the beginning of the new calendar year, Todd has not been as hot as he was in the last couple of months of 2019. However, he has made six cuts in a row, so he is continuing to accumulate FedEx Cup points.
The former Georgia Bulldog found success on the PGA Tour in 2014, recording his only tour win prior to this season and finishing 27th in the FedEx Cup standings. Todd placed 46th in 2015, but has not had a FedEx Cup standing the past four seasons.
It’s hard to see Todd sustaining his outstanding play from earlier this season. When looking at the current standings and seeing names like Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy, among others, it’s hard to imagine that Todd will be able to maintain this level of play and compete with such legendary players in the long run.
Considering all of those factors, as well as Todd’s lack of success over the past four years, Todd is a pretender for the 2020 FedEx Cup. Perhaps he will prove otherwise, but all of the evidence points in that direction at this point in time.
