Was there ever any question when it came to California golf as to who was the best produced out of the “Golden State”? It’s Tiger Woods, of course.

This is likely going to be the easiest one in the entire series. For California Golf, the answer is simple. Tiger Woods is the best golfer to come out of the state of California.

There are some other fantastic golfers from the state, which is something that you would expect from a state like California. Nancy Lopez, with nearly 50 wins on the LPGA Tour, is from there. So are Phil Mickelson, Billy Casper, and Johnny Miller.

Don’t’ forget about Mickey Wright either. She was one of the most accomplished to ever play the game, winning 13 majors and 82 events, all the while retiring by the time she was 34.

When it comes down to it, Tiger Woods is the best California Golf product.

There are a lot of people out there who feel that Tiger Woods is the G.O.A.T. when it comes to golf, including myself. It then makes sense that the best golfer to arguably play the game takes the title when it comes to California.

What he has accomplished in his career is incredible, and just glancing at some of the accolades shows the depth of what he has done.

  • 82 wins
  • 15 majors
  • 11-time player of the year
  • Nine-time Vardon Award Winner
  • Won the Tiger Slam in 2000-01
  • Lowest Scoring Average of All-Time
  • Won 23% of his entrants into events
  • Made 142 consecutive cuts, an All-Time record

I’ll send you on over to Wikipedia, where you can take a look at everything he did so far throughout his career. The list is quite long, so make sure you have a bit of time set aside.

I don’t really need to get into what he has done, or who he is any more than I already have. We are all incredibly familiar with Tiger Woods.

What I wanted to talk about is how he changed the game of golf.

In the mid to late 90’s, Michael Jordan was coming to the end of his career (for the time being), and kids growing up were facing a bit of a void. We still wanted to be like Mike, but he was on the verge of retirement number two.

In comes Tiger Woods. Not quietly either. He won the 1997 Masters by 12 strokes. The most prestigious tournament in the world of golf, and at 21 years old, the young phenom turned the golf world on its head.

Video Games, commercials, apparel, and multiple generations of players got into the game solely because of Tiger Woods. I know that I did. You’re lying to yourself if you think the game would be near as popular as it is now without Eldrick.
