Next up is Connecticut golf, and determining who the top golfer from the Constitution State is. The honor goes to Julius Boros.

Continuing on our series of featuring the top golfer in each state, Connecticut golf is next on the list. Connecticut is home to some of New England’s best golf courses. Yale and Stanwich are two of the finest clubs in the country, and TPC River Highlands hosts the Travelers Championship for the PGA Tour annually. Unlike California, which produced Tiger Woods, Connecticut has not produced many pro golfers, due to the small population (about 3.5 million people) and the brutal winters.

Amongst the select group, no one can match the career of Julius Boros.

Born in Fairfield (less than 60 miles north of New York City), Boros did not turn pro until the tender age of 29. A former accountant, the man who was affectionately known as ‘Moose’ quickly established himself as a top player on the PGA Tour with his smooth swing. He twice paced the tour’s leading money list and captured two Player of the Year awards.

Boros, of Hungarian descent, also made his mark in international team competitions, as he played for Team USA in four Ryder Cups (all American wins). Most significantly, the native of the Nutmeg state won three major championships. He captured two U.S. Opens, and, in arguably his most impressive performance, Boros won the 1968 PGA Championship at the young age of 48. His three major titles are far and away the most produced by a Connecticut-born golfer.

Julius’ legacy goes far beyond his major championships. He won the 1977 Senior PGA Championship and helped form the Senior Tour (now known as PGA Tour Champions). He is also the proud father of Guy Boros, who won on the PGA Tour in 1996. They are one of only three father-son duos to both win PGA Tour events, cementing Boros’ legacy.

Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1982, Julius Boros had an incredible career in golf and his impact makes him the best golfer from the great state of Connecticut.
