As we approach the end of June, it’s time to take a look at the updated FedEx Cup Standings.

A win on the PGA Tour can make a world of difference to a golfer. Today, we look at how it can change their standings in the FedEx Cup. For some, it can catapult them up the rankings. For others, it can secure them a spot near the top, setting them up well for the Tour Championship.

Webb Simpson took home his second win of the season a couple of weeks ago at the Charles Schwab Challenge. With the win, it moved him up to the number one spot on the FedEx Cup leaderboard, at least as we sit at the end of June.

He’s amassed 1,583 points so far, and this becomes more important when you look at how many points the 31st ranked player had last season once the Tour Championship was over. He was only at 1,242 points. Looking at how last season finished, Webb is in a great spot to be in the top 10-20 at worst when the Tour Championship starts.

Then we have Dustin Johnson. He was way down the leaderboard, sitting in 103rd place. A win and 500 points later, and he now sits in 22nd place. Good enough to get him through the first two events and into the Tour Championship, as long as he can gain a few more points along the way.

It’s why both the early events of the season and the ones with lower than average talent are important and can make or break a player’s season in the FedEx Cup.

While each player in the top ten has at least one win, there are a few sitting just outside that are still looking for their first W of the season. Abraham Ancer, Bryson DeChambeau, and Xander Schaufelle are ranked 11th, 12th, and 13th, respectively. Hideki Matsuyama has fallen to 15th, and Kevin Streelman is up to 18th. (You could probably win some money on an over/under of Streelman FedEx Cup Ranking, no one would think him that high.)

Mackenzie Hughes and his fantastic 60 jumped from 70th to 46th, while Doc Redman nearly cleared 70th, going from 89th to 72nd. The 70th spot is important, as that is the cutoff for those going to the second event of the playoffs.

As of now, here are the top ten in the FedEx Cup, all of which have a win, with 1,2, and 6 each having two wins.

  1. Webb Simpson – 1,583 points
  2. Justin Thomas – 1,543 points
  3. Sungjae-Im – 1,531 points
  4. Rory McIlroy – 1,270 points
  5. Patrick Reed – 1,196 points
  6. Brendon Todd – 1,166 points
  7. Daniel Berger – 1,091 points
  8. Marc Leishman – 1,064 points
  9. Lanto Griffin – 1,058 points
  10. Sebastian Munoz – 1,034 points
