PGA Tour: red-hot Webb Simpson atop Rocket Mortgage Classic
By Tim Letcher
Webb Simpson remains the hottest player on the PGA Tour. He proved that fact again on Friday by climbing into the lead at the Rocket Mortgage Classic
After he won at the RBC Classic two weeks ago, yours truly called Webb Simpson the hottest player on the PGA Tour. There was much discussion on social media about that statement and the claim that Simpson was hotter than anyone else. It’s no surprise, at least on this front, that Simpson is tied for the lead after 36 holes at this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.
The week in Detroit started slowly for Simpson, who shot a 4-under par 68 on Thursday to get the week started. That left him three shots behind the leaders after 18 holes of play.

However, Friday’s round was a totally different story for the player currently ranked number one in the FedEx Cup standings. From the very beginning of his second round, Simpson was out to prove that he is still the hottest player on tour.
Simpson birdied the first hole to get his round started in the right direction. He then birdied number two before recording his second birdie of the day, this one on the third hole.
That pattern would continue on the front nine for Simpson
He parred all of the even-numbered holes (two, four, six and eight), while he birdied the odd-numbered holes (one, three, five, seven and nine). That left him with a 5-under par 31 on his front nine.
That pattern was broken on the back nine when Simpson parred both the 10th and 11th holes. However, he answered those pars with a pair of birdies, at numbers 12 and 13, to move to 7-under par on the day.
Pars at numbers 14 and 15 were followed by another birdie, this one at the par-4 16th hole, moving Simpson to 8-under on the day and 12-under for the tournament. He would finish with two pars to complete his round of 64.
Simpson finds himself tied for the lead with Chris Kirk after 36 holes. That duo will be in the final pairing on Saturday.
Simpson is trying to add to an already incredible season that he is having on tour. He has made seven starts thus far and has two wins, a second and a third. He took the lead in the FedEx Cup standings with his win at Harbour Town.
Seeing Simpson in contention again is no surprise. He remains the hottest player on the PGA Tour and if he’s able to win again this week, he will just solidify that fact.
