Once again, we take a look at the leaderboard, this time around at the 3M Open, during the weekend to see Tony Finau in contention.

In a case of rich mans Richy Werenski, Tony Finau struggles to convert during the weekend, specifically during the final round. At the 3M Open, he will look to change that.

I mention Werenski not just because we talked about him earlier in the 3M Open, but because he is an apt comparison for Finau, albeit at a lesser level.

By round, Finau turns in an average of 70, 69.1, 68.4, and 71.1. You never want your worst round, especially when it is by over a stroke, to come during the final round. Maybe changing caddies will be a change for Finau, but only time will tell in that regard.

Even more eyes turn to Finau when you realize that it was just a week ago that he was in a similar situation, and failed miserably. Heading into the final round at the top of the leaderboard, trailing only Rahm, he shot 78, including a front-nine 42, putting him out of contention at the turn.

He struggled again the tournament before at the Rocket Mortgage. He would start with a respectable 69-70-66, only to shoot 74 on Sunday. He wasn’t really in contention to win that week, but finishing out your tournament with a 74 would leave a poor taste in anyone’s mouth.

As one of the most publically liked players on tour, Tony Finau has a great opportunity at the 3M Open to change his career path.

Tony Finau, as he heads to the final round of the 3M Open, will be looking to end a three tournament streak of his worst round of the week falling on a Sunday. It’s been a disturbing trend, as his worst round has come during Sunday in nine of the 14 events he has played this year. Even worse, he missed the cut in three of those 14 events. So in the 11 events he has finished, his worst round comes on Sunday ~82% of the time.

He is only two shots back of the current leaders, Michael Thompson and Richy Werenski. He is going to be playing with Charl Schwartzel, teeing off in the second to last group. As the 3M Open rounds to a close, Tony Finau is arguably the most interesting man to watch towards the top of the leaderboard to see if he can find just his second PGA Tour win.
