The CJ Cup takes place at the spectacular Shadow Creek Golf Club with some of the world’s best teeing off this week in Las Vegas.

The CJ Cup traditionally held at nine bridges in South Korea shifts this week to the immaculate Shadow Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas. One of the staples of the PGA calendar was moved this week to Nevada as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Part of the 2021 PGA schedule, Shadow Creek GC plays host to one of the strongest fields yet on the young season. This week’s field includes four of the world’s top five golfers including 2020 Fed Ex Cup champion and world number one Dustin Johnson.  In total 78 players will tee off this week in the no-cut event.

The Course

The formerly private course hosts its first PGA event this week and has been seen once before by fans when it played host to THE MATCH: Tiger vs Phil in November of 2018. The beautiful Shadow Creek course was designed by Tom Fazio in 1990 and restored in 2008.

This week’s event will play out on a Par 72 that measures out at over 7500 yards and features four par 5’s, four par 3’s, and ten par 4’s including six that play between 450-500 yards.  The course in Las Vegas will be played at altitude and should play a tad shorter than the yardage would indicate this week, although I still anticipate the course will play more difficult overall than events in recent weeks.

With course history being a non-factor this week I’ll be leaning towards golfers that come in showing excellent form in recent events.

Favorites and Picks

The odds used in this article can be found online at popular betting sites, for more golf content and information on the best books available to you check out The Action Network. If you are looking to fill out a fantasy lineup, we’ve got you covered there too.

The world number one Dustin Johnson along with Jon Rahm lead the way at +900, they are followed by two-time winner of this event Justin Thomas at +1100.  Excellent cases can be made for all three this week but instead, I will start my board near the top of the card with the 2019 Fed Ex Cup champion Rory Mcllroy at +1400.

Mcllroy struggled with form during the initial restart however his past two events include two top-ten finishes including an eighth in his last start at the U.S. Open.  Rory is sixth in the field in strokes gained: tee to green over his past fifty rounds and he has also gained strokes in his past three events.  In addition, the putter was working last time out as he gained over three strokes putting in his last start.

The game for Rory seems to be rounding into shape and at these odds, he is a value and my first addition to the card this week.

Matthew Wolf +2200 was a late addition to my card last week after Finau’s withdrawal at the Shriners Open and I will back him again this week after he came so close last time out.  Last week’s runner-up finish was Wolf’s second consecutive 2nd place finish in his previous two starts.

Matthew comes into this week’s event top five in the field in each of the following strokes gained metrics, tee to green, ball striking, and par four scoring from 450-500 yards in the past three months.  A win appears close for Wolf and he will be my second addition to the card at the CJ Cup.

The 2019 PGA rookie of the year Sungjae Im +4500  is the next selection to make the card.  Sungjae comes into this week having made his previous five cuts on tour, this includes three top 25 finishes in three of his previous four starts.

The excellent youngster has gained strokes both from tee to green and approach in his last three events and he rates inside the top five amongst the field in, tee to green, ball striking, and par 4 scoring from 450-500 yards over his past twelve rounds played.

Finally, I’ll take a shot with Si Woo Kim +9000  to finish out the selections for this week. Kim is third in the field from tee to green over the past two months and he comes into this event off of two made cuts including a top ten finish last week.

Si Woo is also top 10 amongst the field from both tee to green and par 4 scoring from 450-500 yards.  Kim comes into this week showing nice form in his previous starts and makes for the perfect long-shot addition to close out this week’s picks.
