Houston Open: Golfer picks to win the Masters Warm-up
Here are the staff picks to win the Houston Open.
We are just a week away from the Masters. Before we get there though, there is one event left on the schedule, and there are a good amount of top players showing up to play the Houston Open.
You may seem some of those players fall into a common trap that you normally see in team sports, and that’s the idea of a “trap game”. Looking ahead and not focusing as much as you should on the game/match at hand.
The version of that, if I had to come up with something different, would-be players focusing on aspects of their game instead of trying to get the lowest score possible. It doesn’t happen too often in golf, but it is 2020, so anything can happen.

Let’s take a look at who the PGN staff thinks will walk away victorious at the Houston Open.
Lee Westwood
Kasey Kuhrts
Denny McCarthy
Hans Geevers – McCarthy has two top-six finishes in his last three events on the PGA Tour.
Scottie Scheffler
Doug Hoff – After COVID derailed his blazing hot game going into the US Open, Scottie was scuttling a bit. His game has slowly started to come back into form. Playing in his home state of Texas, this seems like as good a time as any for Scottie to capture his first win. The 2,000 fans in attendance each day should only help the local kid.
Tyrrell Hatton
Mike Randleman – In an excerpt from this week’s power rankings…
“That’s because in the month prior he finished seventh (fifth gross) at the Tour Championship, first at the European Tour’s top event, the BMW PGA Championship and T-3rd at the CJ Cup.”
Zach Johnson
Chris O’Day – Johnson is going to take home the W this week… no, not Dustin Johnson, but Zach Johnson.
Tony Finau
Jay Wilhelm III
Bill Felber – I’m going to take Tony Finau. He got his own rust off a few weeks ago at the Zozo, and before laying out was actually playing very consistently.
Josh Chandler – The talented golfer is ranked inside the top 25 in every statistical category including strokes gained around the green where he is 15th amongst the field. Finau crushes his approach shots from beyond 200 yards ranking 1st in that category. For Tony, it will come down to the putter this week as it often does, but after gaining strokes with the flat stick his last two times out I’ll chance that he finds the touch on the greens and challenges for the win this week.
Jordan Spieth
Kathy Bissell – I say Jordan Spieth wins in Houston and begins a comeback. Of course, I believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, too.
Best of luck to everyone at the Houston Open as they tune-up for the Masters.
