The Masters started with a five-way tie for first as the third round began. It turned into the Dustin Johnson show later in the day.

Dustin Johnson was seen as one of the favorites prior to the Masters this week. After 54 holes, DJ is not only in the driver’s seat to win the event, he’s threatening to run away with it.

Johnson shot a 7-under par 65 on Saturday to turn a five-way tie at the beginning of the third round into a four-shot advantage with just 18 holes to play. And he did it with dazzling play all day long.

DJ started his round in fine fashion. After a par at the first, he went to the par-5 second hole, where he nearly holed his shot for an albatross. He would settle for a tap-in eagle to get to 2-under on the day.

That seemed to jump start the round for DJ. He would birdie the third and the fourth holes and he was quickly 4-under par on the day and 13-under for the round. And the chase to catch him was on.

DJ would birdie the par-4 seventh hole, then would par eight and nine to finish his front nine with a 5-under par 31.

It was his steady play on the back nine that allowed him to build his lead even more.

He would par 10, 11 and 12 before a birdie on the par-5 13th hole got him to 6-under on his round and 15-under for the tournament. He led by three shots at that point.

DJ would par 14th, birdie the par-5 15th, then par 16, 17 and 18 to close out his round. That was a 2-under 34 on the back nine, with all of the pressure that comes with leading the Masters. It was an impressive stretch of golf.

After his 65, DJ leads a unique group of players by four shots. Those at 12-under include Abraham Ancer, Sungjae Im and Cameron Smith. Another shot back is Dylan Frittelli. It’s a full six shots back to Justin Thomas.

DJ is in a strong position with just 18 holes to play. After proving that he is the best player in the world during his September run to the FedEx Cup, Johnson is now ready to add a second major championship to his resume. And if he plays like he did on Saturday, it could be a complete blowout.
