As we approach the re-start of the 2020-21 golf season, it’s worth asking… could Dustin Johnson go back-to-back as the FedEx Cup champion?

Right now, Dustin Johnson is at the top of the proverbial golf world. He is ranked number one in the world, is the most recent Masters champion, and the reigning FedEx Cup Champion as well.

As he approaches the 2021 calendar year, there are multiple things that he will be looking to maintain or repeat. With his recent Masters’ victory, Dustin Johnson has gained sole possession of the 3rd most weeks holding down the number one spot in the world. He is just ahead of Rory but has a long way to go to catch Greg Norman at number 2. He would need to be number one for 4.5 years straight to catch the shark.

Number one is a whole different ballgame. If DJ can keep hold of number one for the next 11 years… he would still be three weeks short of Tiger Woods. It does seem he will increase his lead over Rory, but that is probably not at the top of his list.

Then there is the Masters. Dustin Johnson could be ascending to a whole new level, but he will first have to defend his title, looking to become the first golfer since Tiger Woods in 2001-2002. This would go a long way in not just increasing his all-time rank, but in increasing the likelihood of him going back-to-back at the FedEx Cup.

If Dustin Johnson was able to win the FedEx Cup two years in a row, he would become the first to do so.

We have yet to see back-to-back winners during the 14 year run of the event. There are some positives though if you go back and look at some of the statistics as it relates to previous winners.

Nine of the 14 winners have been ranked in the top ten, and DJ actually tied for 10th worst ranking to win by heading into the playoffs last year ranked 15th in FedEx Cup points. Currently sitting atop the FedEx Cup standings with 950 points, there is a great chance he is in the top ten once we get to the playoffs this time around.

You have to look at the fact that the biggest pressures in DJ’s golf life have been lifted. He’s won the FedEx Cup and the Masters. Yes, you could argue that he still needs to win the Open Championship and the PGA Championship. That he could win more majors to be fully in the conversation of best golfers. What I mean though is he has fought through and succeeded in pressure-packed situations, which will greatly benefit him going forward.

We may be seeing the best golf ever out of DJ right now as well. He has finished second or better in four of the last seven majors, and T-6th in another one. He won tournaments in June, August, September, and November last season. Four tournaments over a six-month stretch are incredible, especially when they include the Tour Championship and the Masters.

I’ve called for some other golfers to breakout and possibly win their first majors. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if DJ was the one who took hold of 2021, won a couple of majors, and repeated as your FedEx Cup Champion.
