Phoenix Open: Winners and Losers at TPC Scottsdale

Each week on the PGA Tour, there are players who exceed expectations and others who fall short. Here are Pro Golf Now, we call them winners and losers. Here are this week’s winners and losers from the American Express.

Winners

Brooks Koepka – He won for the eighth time on the PGA Tour with his second career win in Phoenix. Koepka rallied with a 66 on Saturday and a 65 on Sunday to get past a number of outstanding players.

Jordan Spieth – Despite his 72 on Sunday, it was a good week for Spieth. His amazing 60 on Saturday got him into contention and he ultimately tied for fourth.

Xander Schauffele – He’s a threat to win every time he tees it up and he could have won on Sunday. Despite falling short, it was a tie for second for Schauffele this week.

Carlos Ortiz – He made a run on Sunday with a 64, ultimately finishing T4. That’s three Top 10 finishes for Ortiz this season and he’s now seventh in the FedEx Cup standings.

Steve Stricker – At 53 years old, Stricker was in contention all week in Phoenix. He was solid all week, playing his game and finally finishing in a tie for fourth place. A very good showing for a guy who was playing against players half his age.

Losers

Rickie Fowler – We wondered if this could be the week that Fowler jump-started his season. It wasn’t. A past champion at this event, Fowler opened with a 74 on Thursday. Even a nice 68 on Friday could not get him inside the cut line. Another disappointing finish for Fowler.

Jason Day – The Australian shot 71 on Thursday and 70 on Friday to miss the cut by two. He has now missed the cut in both of his starts in 2021 and three of his last four events.

Hudson Swafford – On his way to a 77 on Thursday, Swafford putted a ball into the water. That’s the kind of week it was for him. He added a 73 on Friday and only beat two players in the entire field.

Gary Woodland – He won here in 2018 but got off to a terrible start this week with a 77 on Thursday. He rallied for a 68 on Friday but missed the cut by four shots.

Harris English – He entered this week in third place in the FedEx Cup standings. But a 72-69 combination left him outside the cut line this week. Perhaps just a blip on the radar, but still a missed cut for English.
