WGC Workday Championship: Tournament preview and picks
The first World Golf Championship event of the season has arrived with the WGC Workday Championship and with it marks the official start of the PGA’s Florida swing.
The Genesis Invitational certainly did not disappoint this past weekend as it provided yet another dramatic Sunday finish in 2021 on the PGA Tour. The event had everything from tough conditions, to a wind delay, and not one, but two holes required in a playoff finish that saw Max Homa win an event that is close to his heart and in doing so pick up his second victory on tour.

Max Homa’s excellent win on Sunday, unfortunately, came at the expense of another runner-up finish for Tony Finau that will only intensify the criticism surrounding him that he can’t get over the line. The excellent closing round by Tony on Sunday provided us with much entertainment but unfortunately, we came up short in the outright market once again and so we move on to the WGC Workday Championship.
WGC Workday Championship at The Concession
This week marks the first WGC event of 2021 with two more still to come later in the year. Traditionally held in Mexico in its recent history this year’s rendition has been shifted to the Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin-designed Concession Golf Club just outside of Bradenton, Florida.
The Concession opened in 2006 and while it has yet to host a PGA event it did play host to the 2015 NCAA golf championships that were won by Bryson DeChambeau in the individual event, and Louisiana State University in the team portion. Notable names that played here back in 2015 and are also playing this week include, Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler, and Thomas Detry.
The 72 man field that is officially the strongest of 2021 includes the top 50 ranked players in The Official World Golf ranking with only Tiger Woods and Paul Casey not taking part this week. The field also includes highly ranked players on the European Tour, Asian PGA Tour Order of Merit, Australasian Tour Order of Merit, Japan Golf Tour Order of Merit, and Sunshine Tour Order of Merit.
The Concession is suitably named after the 1969 Ryder Cup event when Jack Nicklaus conceded a short par putt to Tony Jacklin that resulted in an official tie between both the American team and the Europeans. The course is a PAR 72 that plays at 7,474 yards and while little is known of the course it is widely considered to play very difficult with long PAR 5’s and PAR 3’s and tiny greens with sharp undulations.
