Yesterday at the WGC-Workday Championship, it was Dustin Johnson who shot his worst round in nearly a year. On Friday, it was Jon Rahm who did almost exactly the same thing.

Rahm was in the mix after 18 holes at the Workday. He shot a 68 on Thursday and found himself in a tie for seventh place after one round.

Then, Friday happened. And for Rahm, that was not a positive thing.

Playing the back nine first, Rahm got off to a decent start. He recorded pars on the 10th, 11th and 12th holes. Then, on the par-5 13th hole, Rahm hit the green in two and was able to make a two-putt birdie to get into red figures.

However, he started trending in the other direction on the next hole. On that par-3 14th hole, Rahm missed the green and was unable to get up-and-down. He suffered his first bogey of the day.

On the par-4 15th hole, Rahm hit the green in regulation, but was 60 feet from the cup. He needed three putts to finish, suffering his second consecutive bogey.

Then on the 16th hole, Rahm found the rough, was unable to get out of his with his second shot, finally got to the green, but missed a 15-footer for par. It was a third straight bogey. It would be followed by another bogey, this one at the 17th hole, dropping Rahm to 3-over par.

His second nine started with a great deal of promise.

Rahm birdied the par-4 first hole. After a par on the second, he birdied the par-5 third hole. He went from 3-over to 1-over in the span of three holes and seemed to have things going in the right direction.

After a par on the fourth hole, disaster struck for Rahm on the fifth. He hit his tee shot into a fairway bunker. Then he hit his second shot in the water. By the time he finished the hole, he suffered a double bogey and was back to 3-over.

Rahm would go on to bogey the sixth and seventh holes, slipping to 5-over par. He ended up shooting 76, tying his worst round of the year. His previous worst round this season was a 76 in the third round of the U.S. Open.

Rahm took himself out of contention with his bad round on Friday. Now, he can only try to rally and get back into the Top 20, or maybe the Top 10, but that won’t be easy.
