2021 Zurich Classic: Winners and Losers from Louisiana

Each week on the PGA Tour, there are players who play above expectations and those who come up short of what was expected of them. Here at Pro Golf Now, we call them winners and losers. Here are the winners and losers from this week’s Zurich Classic.

Winners

Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith – The Aussies won the title on the first hole of a playoff. Seen as one of the favorites heading into the week, they lived up to that expectation by claiming the title in Louisiana.

Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel – The South African pairing didn’t get much attention prior to the event, but they played well all week. It was especially important for Schwartzel who jumped 44 spots in the FedEx Cup standings.

Peter Uihlein and Richy Werenski – This is a pair that very few thought could contend this week. But when the dust settled, they found themselves in third place, which is a really good showing for this duo.

Sam Burns and Billy Horschel – It was Burns who led this pair to a 63 on Thursday. A solid 65-69 weekend left them in a tie for fourth, which was better than expected.

Ryan Palmer and Jon Rahm – The defending champions finished solo seventh this week. Alternate shot didn’t help them, as they shot 71 on Friday and 70 on Sunday but they were still able to sneak inside the Top 10.

Losers

Collin Morikawa and Matthew Wolff – Some thought this pairing could win the entire event. Instead, they didn’t even make it to the weekend. After a 70 on Thursday, they needed to make something happen on Friday. They did, it was just in the wrong direction, as they shot 77 to miss the cut.

Sungjae Im and Byeong Hun An – The South Koreans shot a 68 on Thursday in the four-ball portion but had a 73 in the foursomes format on Friday. That was not good enough to make the cut, which was surprising from this duo.

James Hahn and Martin Trainer – After a 69 on Thursday, the duo was in position to make a run at the weekend. By that dream died on Friday when they shot an 80 to miss the cut by a long shot.

Sebastian Cappelen and Mark Hubbard – Why do I bring them up? For this reason alone. They shot 63 on Thursday and were contending for the lead. Then, they shot 76 on Friday to not only fall out of contention but also outside the cut line. Ouch.

Viktor Hovland and Kris Ventura – The Norwegians were in contention with one round to play. Then, they shot 78 on Sunday to fall from fourth to T25. Tough day indeed.
