Watson won for the first time at the Travelers in 2010. He had to do it the hard way, topping Corey Pavin and Scott Verplank in a playoff. The win was Watson’s first on the PGA Tour.
Five years later, Watson came to the Travelers as a much more accomplished player. He had won the Masters in both 2012 and 2014 and had seven total tour wins under his belt.
In that 2015 event, Watson again needed a playoff to claim the victory. This time, he topped Paul Casey to get it done, claiming his eighth PGA Tour win and second at TPC River Highlands.
In 2018, Watson got off to a slow start with a 70 on Thursday. But he fired a 63 on Friday to get himself into contention. A 67 on Saturday left him near the top of the leaderboard and another 63, this one on Sunday, gave him a three-shot victory over Casey once again.
Watson has played better over the last few months, getting himself into contention a few times. He tied for ninth at the WGC-Match Play and tied for 26th at the Masters. He tied for eighth at the Zurich Classic and tied for 13th at the Valspar.
He tied for 18th at the Wells Fargo before finishing 80th at the PGA Championship. He withdrew at the Memorial Tournament but played well on Thursday and Friday at the U.S. Open before finishing in a tie for 50th.
All of the momentum, and his history, make Watson a decent choice this week.
It remains to be seen if he can find the magic again at TPC River Highlands. If he does, Watson has as good of a shot as anyone in the field to win.
Watson looks forward to returning to the site of three of his 12 PGA Tour victories. He’s hoping to make it a lucky 13 this week in Connecticut.
