All of us that play or have played golf somewhat regularly know how hard the game is. Sometimes everything goes right for you, others it all goes wrong.

You can get on a roll over a long period of time, and you can go on a slide that seems unending. When I’ve been in a rut, I’e mainly attributed it to just me being bad, because I’m a reasonable human and I know I’m an average, at best, golfer.

At no point in my golf life have I ever blamed my shortcomings on my clubs, because it’s a ridiculous notion. Apparently, that’s not the prerogative of our buddy ole pal Bryson DeChambeau.

Bryson DeChambeau is many things: professional golfer, scientist, beefcake, egomaniac. He’s had his share of controversies and none of them have made him look good after the fact.

Which takes us to his first round at The Open, where Bryson hit just 4 fairways all day. Tee shot after tee shot went straight into the knee high fescue grass.

It seemed on every hole, Bryson was hitting his second shot from out of the deep stuff. You would think that after about the fifth time you missed the fairway off the tee, maybe, perhaps you should try different.

Well that’s not how DeChambeau operates and he just kept putting his head down to try and hit the ball across the English Channel into France, with little success, resulting in a one over round of 71 on Thursday.

In his post round press conference, DeChambeau had some less than sparkling things to say about his driver and it manufacturer, Cobra. DeChambeau said, “If I can hit it down the middle of the fairway, that’s great, but with the driver right now, the driver sucks”.

I’ll spare you the absurdity of him saying that when he hits it well he likes it, and when he doesn’t hit it well, he doesn’t like it. Thank you for that critical thinking there Captain Obvious.

Blaming the club for your under performance and unwillingness to adjust is a cop out, plain and simple. It’s an excuse that shouldn’t surprise anybody, including Ben Schomin, Cobra’s tour operations manager, and also caddied for DeChambeau in Detroit two weeks ago.

Schomin said, “It’s just really, really painful when he says something that stupid.” Cobra makes drivers specifically for Bryson DeChambeau and have already tried numerous variations of driver builds. Clearly they have yet to find one for hid liking.

“He has never really been happy, ever. Like, it’s very rare when he’s happy,” Schomin added. Cobra has compiled a ton of data on how a driver head reacts to different conditions, but it’s hard to quantify the exact physics of someone who swings as hard as DeChambeau does.

Cobra are working their tails off to try and satisfy one of the biggest names on tour, which is probably a fool’s errand at the end of the day.

Since then, Bryson DeChambeau has issued an apology, saying “I sucked today, not my equipment.” To a point it’s hard for me to believe he’s 100% sincere, given his past blow ups at cameramen, rules officials, fire ants, etc.

Ultimately, I think his apology falls on deaf ears. All we have to do is wait for the next controversy. Bryson will tee off his second round at 9:26 ET Friday morning.
