Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm have both spent the last week preparing for a trip to Tokyo to play in the Olympics. Both will be staying home following positive tests for Covid-19.

It was a wild 8 hour or so period for the golf world as we learned of DeChambeau’s positive test late Saturday night, and early Sunday morning, Rahm also tested positive.

Just like that two of the top six players in the world bite the dust.

Some of you know how much I don’t like Bryson DeChameau, but I really do feel bad for him. I think he would thrive on the Olympic stage. It would’ve been good for him, give him another chance to show his supreme power.

While I do feel bad for DeChambeau, I feel about 100 times worse for Jon Rahm.

This is the second time in just about eight weeks that Jon Rahm has tested positive. You’ll recall he was alerted that he tested positive immediately after his 3rd round at the Memorial Tournament, leading by six shots.

That almost surreal moment  on the CBS telecast where you see PGA officials approach Rahm as he was walking off the green to inform him, and his reaction of bending down at the knees. The speculation of Jim Nantz and Nick Faldo trying to figure out what was happening before Dottie Pepper, walking with the final group, confirmed Rahm’s positive test.

Rahm was vaccinated in May when he tested positive the first time, but was still within his two week window of being fully vaccinated. two months later, he’s tested positive again, and I’m afraid the answers are much more scarce.

Beyond the disappointment of the players and golf fans everywhere of not getting to see two of the best in the world compete in the Olympics , is the fact that Covid-19 is still very much out there.

Hopefully these Olympics can go off without any major Covid-19 issues. They already have a typhoon to deal with in Japan.

There will be no replacement for Jon Rahm, leaving Adri Arnaus as the only representative for Spain in golf. Patrick Reed will go in Bryson DeChambeau’s stead. Reed finished T11 in the 2016 Rio games.
