This year has been a bit of a wild ride for Jon Rahm. He won the US Open at Torrey Pines, climbed to number one in the world, has the Tour high of twelve Top 10 finishes. He was also robbed of a win at the Memorial Tournament after testing positive for Covid-19, and again right before the Olympics.

Rahm is well rested as he made his way up to New Jersey for the first of a triad of FedEx Cup Playoff tournaments. This, starting with The Northern Trust at Liberty National, in Jersey City.

Rahm lamented about missing the Olympics saying, “Still makes me a little sad, I’m not going to lie. I’m going to have to wait three more years to hopefully qualify for the Olympics, but I was ready for this one.”

Rahm said that he had to take three Covid-19 tests before going to Tokyo. He needed to test negative three days in a row to be able to travel. The test on the third day came back positive, along with a follow up.

He had gotten a saliva and PCR tests, both were negative. He got tested for antibodies and had them. “I can’t really explain what in the world happened.” Rahm said.

Jon Rahm was the favorite going into Kasumigaseki and after the year he’s had, you can’t be surprised. We’ve known Jon Rahm for long enough to know how much he wanted to represent Spain in the Olympics. Who knows, if he doesn’t test positive, perhaps he presides in the middle of the medal stand instead of Xander Schauffele.

Missing the Olympics did give him a chance to rest up before he dives into a three week battle for the FedEx Cup. His body should be right as he hasn’t played since finishing T3 at The Open on July 18th.

Jon Rahm has history on his side as well. He finished third at The Northern Trust the last time it was played at Liberty National two years ago and also won the BMW Championship last year. Rahm is just dying to get out there and make a run at the FedEx Cup.

Rahm has absolutely nothing to worry about when it comes to moving on in the playoffs. Coming into this week he is 5th in the FedEx Cup standings on the strength of his US Open win and 12 top tens, meaning he is well inside the cut off for both the BMW and The Tour.

For those unfamiliar, the top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings will play in the Northern Trust this weekend. The top 70 will move on to the BMW Championship. Concluding with the top 30 fighting it out at The Tour Championship.

Jon Rahm is the betting favorite to win this week, though it will be tough with the muscle of this field. I know he’s 5th, but the FedEx Cup is his to lose. That doesn’t mean that he’ll win this week, or any for that matter, but it’s impossible to count him out. He’s been the best player all year and I think he will be the FedEx Cup champion when the dust settles.
