Adam Scott appeared to have things going in the right direction. After playing well last week, getting into a playoff at the Wyndham Championship before ultimately finishing second, Scott had his game in tune again on Thursday at the 2021 Northern Trust.

Scott continued his hot play from last week in the first round at Liberty National. He had three birdies, an eagle and one bogey on his way to a 4-under par 67 in round one. That left him in a tie for fourth place after one day.

The other thing that Scott needed to do this week was to move up in the FedEx Cup standings. He entered the week at No. 82 on that list. To advance to next week’s BMW Championship, he would have to be inside the Top 70. After Thursday’s round, he was.

The, Friday happened. And now, Scott’s postseason seems to be coming to a crashing halt.

Scott had a very quiet front nine on Friday. He parred the first five holes of the day before suffering a bogey at the par-5 sixth hole. He would par the final three holes to shoot a 1-over par 37. Not great, but not awful.

Awful came on the back nine.

On the par-4 10th, Scott lost his drive right and was forced to take a penalty. His third shot landed in a greenside bunker and his fourth got him on the green, about seven feet from the cup. But his bogey putt missed and he suffered a double, dropping to 3-over on the day and 1-under for the tournament.

Scott parred the next two holes, then birdied the par-5 13th hole to get back to 2-under par for the tournament. It seemed like a step in the right direction.

Instead, he carded a bogey on the 14th hole. Then on the 15th, he sealed his fate.

There, his drive went left and again, he was forced to take a penalty. Scott’s third shot came up short of the green and he would go on to make a double bogey.

He was able to birdie the 17th hole on his way in, but it doesn’t appear to be enough. Scott will likely miss the cut and, because of that, his playoffs will be over.

It’s hard to say what happened to Scott on the back nine on Friday. But whatever it was, it cost him the rest of the postseason.
